Made for GMTK2023 Game Jam with the theme "Role Reversed"

Quell is a deck-building roguelite style game in which you control your enemies, but not your own deck!

The spirits are restless. Use the Quelling Staff to shepherd and soothe angered spirits. The staff is powered by your elemental cards, but it's power is unpredictable. Upon encountering spirits, you may choose which to soothe first, but the staff is unpredictable!

Shape your deck and play the odds to quell all the spirits!

How To Play

Each encounter, you select an enemy to guide. Your deck then plays random cards until a spirit's power has been reduced to zero.

Matching a spirit's element will be doubly effective!

When a spirit's power reaches zero, it has been quelled!

Quell all spirits in an encounter to clear it. If you cannot, you will lose a life.

After each encounter, you add one card to your deck.

Try to clear 10 encounters before losing 3 lives!

FAQ

Q: Is the power actually doubled when the type matches?
A: On the card, yes. In the code...? Well, I guess this shows you shouldn't try to add last minute polish running on no sleep or you could risk removing a very important line of code.

Q: How are my cards played?
A: Randomly! You can check your total deck list and see which cards have been played.

Hiya, congrats on the GMTK 2023 entry! I couldn’t find another way to contact you - just wanted to say that I’m one of the evil minds behind Golf 2, a game which you greatly enjoyed in 2021, and if you’d like to see our team’s 2023 entry, you can find it on my profile :)

Best way to get someone to play your game is to play theirs and leave a feedback comment. The jam page comments even automatically link your entry so people can find it more easily.

So to comment on my actual game page asking me to play yours without even indicating that you've tried mine or have feedback feels pretty disingenuous.

The awkward part is that I already had your game on my list of games to play but hadn't gotten to it yet.

Jams are great environments to learn and get feedback. They're less useful for guerilla marketing. If you put energy into giving feedback,  others will be more inclined to do the same for you.

Sorry that my post came off in a rude way! I won’t do it again.

I’m just getting around to playing the games now that I’m home from work, and your game is on my list. I’m excited to see what’s in store :)
